Fierce fighting between Congolese forces and M23 rebels in eastern DR Congo

Fierce fighting between Congolese forces and M23 rebels has been ongoing for the past two days near the strategic town of Kibumba. M23 rebels took control of the town on Wednesday. The army was able to recapture its base in Rumangabo during the past few days, however, the surrounding area appeared to be under M23 control. The M23 Tutsi insurgency in the region stems from the long fallout of the 1994 genocide in neighboring Rwanda. M23 leadership justified previous attacks inside Conge by saying it is battling the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a militia founded by ethnic Hutus who fled Rwanda after participating in the genocide. This event took place on 05/26/2022 at the following location: Kibumba, Democratic Republic of Congo.
