Before we get to that, the US plans to present a resolution to the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza today. The resolution aims to support diplomatic efforts to secure the release of hostages and increase humanitarian aid.

The wording of the resolution indicates a shift in the US position, stating that a ceasefire is not dependent on a specific agreement. Along with the US, European leaders are also urging a ceasefire and condemning Israel's reluctance to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. This change in language from the US increases pressure on the Security Council. It also may have influenced other EU member states to support a temporary halt leading to a sustainable ceasefire.

The resolution comes after satellite imagery was released, showing significant damage to buildings in Gaza. The US has previously vetoed UN Security Council votes related to the war but is now increasing pressure on Israel. The new resolution sends a clear message of the Biden administration's frustration with Israel's handling of the war.
