US designates cartels as foreign terrorist organizations

The U.S. State Department has designated Mexican drug cartels, MS-13, and Venezuela's Tren de Aragua as foreign terrorist organizations. The designation, signed by Secretary of State Rubio, follows Trump's executive order and could lead to financial sanctions against these groups. While some Americans support stronger action against these organizations, particularly due to the fentanyl crisis, Mexican President Sheinbaum warned against violations of Mexican sovereignty. She did note potential benefits for joint money laundering investigations. Rubio expressed a preference for cooperation with Mexico while keeping all options open. This event took place on 02/19/2025 at the following location: Washington, DC, United States.
