Tigray rebels announce withdrawal from Amhara and Afar

A Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) spokesman announced in a letter to the UN that their forces would be withdrawing from the Amhara and Afar regions and returning to the Tigray region of Ethiopia. The statement said that the withdrawal would be a decisive opening for peace in the region. The letter asked for prisoner releases and war crimes investigations to those responsible for war crimes during the 13-month war. It also called for a no-fly zone for hostile aircraft over Tigray and imposing arms embargos on Ethiopia and its ally Eritrea. It also asked for a UN mechanism to verify the withdrawal of external armed forces from Tigray. This event took place on 12/20/2021 at the following location: Mekellle, Ethiopia.
